Choosing Between White Gold and Platinum

What’s popular with engagement and wedding bands

White is still the most preferred color for metals when people are looking for jewelry. Especially when it comes to engagement rings and wedding bands; platinum and white gold are the most obvious metal choices.
Gold and platinum are rare and precious metals that are very suitable to making jewelry. They have always been associated with wealth and luxury. Both are given the term “Noble Metal” because of their resistance to rust, corrosion, and to most chemical reaction.

History of Gold (Yellow & White) and Platinum

From prehistoric times; gold has been mined and used by people in many civilizations. It has such an attractive yellow color that has captivated the dreams and imagination of people for millennia; it is the universal sign of wealth, and still plays a very important role as a financial medium. Gold is found in nature in almost pure form; it is relatively easy to mine, melt, and process into coins and jewelry.
As a substitute for yellow gold, white gold is made by adding alloys, such as platinum or zinc, to yellow gold. White gold was created in the 1920’s and has gained popularity especially for making engagement and wedding rings. White gold rings compliment gems of different colors and make the appearance of the rings very eye-catching.
Because of the high density and malleability of gold; it is easy to shape it into thin and workable wires and plates. Although; in its pure form it can be used to make some type of jewelry; gold is mostly used as an alloy with other metals (typically 58% pure in 14 karat gold, and 75% pure in 18 karat gold). The reason for alloying gold is to make it more workable and durable; and also to give it different colors. Therefore; jewelry can be made in yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold depending on the other metals used in the alloy.
Platinum is a relatively new element. This beautiful noble metal was discovered less than three hundred years ago, and the process to use it in jewelry was perfected in the second half of the nineteenth century. It is such an extremely rare metal; that it was calculated that all the platinum that has ever been mined in the world (about 180 million troy ounce), would fit in a cube twenty feet on each side.
The density and malleability of platinum is even higher than that of gold. It is used in jewelry in an almost pure alloy (typically 90% or 95% pure). Platinum gained a reputation of exclusivity because of its rarity, high price, and purity. Since the style and fashion of the time was to use only white metal in the making of diamond jewelry; the beginning of the twentieth century saw platinum being offered by the famous luxury jewelry brands (like Tiffany and Cartier).

New Metals and Mixes for Jewelry

When the Second World War came, there was a lot of rationing for metals that were needed for the war effort. The government restricted the use of platinum except for the military industry purpose. That restriction led the jewelry industry to search for an alternative to platinum that will fill the gap in the demand for precious white metal. The industry succeeded in developing the alloy mix and the technique of making white gold. Basically; the alloy or mix needed to produce white gold is a combination of nickel, palladium, and silver in various percentages depending on the type of jewelry and the method of manufacturing.
During the 1980’s, platinum gradually came back and stayed side by side with white gold in the jewelers’ showcases. By then the styles has changed, and for the next thirty years, yellow gold was the popular choice for the type and color of metal being used in making jewelry. In the 1990’s; there was another shift in the styles, and the appetite for white metals came back strongly. Both white gold and platinum became very popular again, and this trend is continuing especially in wedding rings.

The preference between these two metals remains mostly personal, because each has its own appeal and advantage. The advantage for white gold, it is more readily available, the selection of jewelry made in 10 kt, 14 kt, or 18 kt white gold is wider in general and more so in the very important category of bridal rings and wedding bands. White gold jewelry is noticeably less expensive, and it is easier to repair and resize.
The only problem with white gold is it is not really white, it is yellowish-white. It does require periodical maintenance of polish and rhodium finish in order to keep it white and shinny. The rhodium finish process is relatively inexpensive, and can be done by many jewelers in a short time.
On the other hand; platinum has the advantage of exclusivity, and being a status symbol. And because of its high density, it does not wear down or thin out with time. Since platinum is a natural white metal, platinum jewelry does not need the periodical rhodium plating that white gold jewelry needs.
However, even though platinum is very dense and doesn’t wear down; it is easy to dent and scratch and become dull faster than gold. Regular polish is required to keep it shining and elegant.

Rise in Value for Gold and Platinum

During the last four years, the price of gold escalated in a much higher percentage than the price of platinum, that’s why the prices of gold and platinum jewelry are very close to each others, and the price of the metal is a lesser factor in making a choice between them. At the end it remains customer personal preference.

Jewelry to Clothes - Color Coordination: The Basics

The importance of your Wardrobe

Whether you are aware of it or not, the moment you walk out the door of your home, you are making a statement of who you are.  A good wardrobe or coordination of an outfit is absolutely essential for success.  It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do (lawyer, business executive, plumber, teacher), looking sharp will improve how others perceive you.  Oftentimes, perception defines how you will be remembered and whether a potential customer, client or employer will be motivated to pursue a relationship.

Color coordination of Jewelry & Wardrobe

When you put together an outfit, color is one of the most important aspects of your entire wardrobe.  Poor choice of color can draw attention to flaws, whereas a good coordination of your jewelry and wardrobe can help you look sensational.  Fashion is about color and how you use it in your clothes and jewelry.   Most jewelry does not require coordination, but if you really want to dress to impress, you must be pickier with your gemstone jewelry.

The ABC’s of Primary and Secondary Colors:

Primary colors should be carefully coordinated with secondary colors to bring out the best in you and your look.
Primary colors are: red, yellow, or blue.
The secondary colors are made by mixing equal parts of any two complementary. The secondary colors include: green (yellow and blue), orange (yellow and red) and purple (blue and red).

Gemstone Jewelry Coordinated

The ruby, sapphire, emerald, citrine and amethyst gemstones have a distinguished flavor and appeal that can be added to your style and look.  For example, a beautiful citrine necklace goes very well with a purple top, brown Jacket or beige shirt.

Blue gemstones work well with blue, navy and yellow attire.   These gemstones include; blue tanzanite, blue topaz, and blue sapphire.

Gold jewelry and Onyx gemstones work beautifully with with Black dresses or White dresses.

Also, some colorful gemstones are perfect for wearing in spring and summer seasons; this includes the green peridot gemstone and the blue topaz gemstones.  Matching these bright and brilliant colors with more soft neutral wardrobes makes it a perfect spring or summer look!

Diamond and CZ (cubic zirconia) jewelry works well with any colored outfits:

Some Quick Rules on Color Coordination:

The color wheel is really a great tool for beginners.  You use the color wheel to determine what colors coordinate well with each other and what doesn’t.  These are the basic rules to coordinating your wardrobe and jewelry:
  • Blue and Green Outfits:  white pearls,
  • Purple outfits: go with citrine, gold toned jewelry and even green emeralds
  • Red outfits: go with emerald jewelry
  • Black outfits: go with any color!
  • Neutral outfits: go with diamonds and black jewelry
  • All outfits go well with diamonds!

3 Steps to choosing jewelry for your wardrobe:

  1. Figure out the main color of your outfit, if you are wearing a yellow top with grey pants, yellow is your main color.
  2. Look at your main color on the wheel
  3. Look across from the main color of your outfit and see the complimentary colors of what you should add as an accessory.
Example: If your outfit is on the most part blue, look across the color wheel and see that yellow and orange  hues are complimentary choices for jewelry.  Use citrine gemstones to give your attire the touch it needs to make it look amazing!  We at LeVive Jewelry recommend citrine pendants, citrine rings or yellow topaz jewelry.

Jewelry Care - Tips to keep your precious jewelry like new

Your Personal jewelry are fine and delicate products that require frequent care and maintenance. Through our experience with our customers we have noticed a lot of negligence and sometimes even abuse to these beautiful pieces. It is important for you as a jewelry owner to understand the effect that everyday activities can have on your jewelry.
Jewelry can obviously be scratched, broken, or damaged beyond repair from any sort of trauma or forceful impact. However, jewelry can also be damaged through regular human activities. Activities such as washing your hands or putting on lotion can slowly deteriorate the look and integrity of your jewelry. Lotions and washing soaps lay a non-transparent film on diamonds and gems, not only diminishing their color and brilliance, but also providing an area for more dirt and dust to collect. This will convert a sparkling, beautiful stones, into a dull, unattractive rocks. This process often happens slowly over time so that many people don’t even notice the difference and only remember what their jewelry is supposed to look like after they have had it cleaned.
However, there are many steps that people can take at home in order to keep their jewelry in clean, sparkling conditions.
  1. Avoid applying any type of lotion or washing your hands while still wearing your jewelry.
  2. There are many care kits that can be used at home to clean and wash jewelry. You can go to any fine jeweler which should be able to provide a cleaning solution for diamonds, a cleaning solution for delicate gems, and a solution for sterling silver.
  3. Frequent visits should be made to your local full service fine jeweler for a thorough sonic and steam cleaning and check-up. This should not cost you a thing as most jewelers are willing to provide this service free of charge, even if you did not purchase the piece from them. They should also perform a full inspection and inform you if there is any required maintenance or repairs that need to be done.
  4. If you have warranty required visit every six months, be sure not to miss that. Because your visit will enforce your warranty, and your jewelry will cleaned and checked
  5. At least once a year each piece of jewelry should be given to your trusted jeweler for a thorough polishing, cleaning, and rhodium plating (for white gold). At the same time the professional should examine the piece thoroughly and inform you if any stone tightening or prong re-tipping is required.
  6. One of the major problems that lead to loosing stones from the setting is the normal wear of the prongs and channels that hold stones in place. Be sure to ask your jeweler to check them for you.
  7. Rings in particular are more exposed for tear and wear. Most likely, any rings more than five years old will need prongs enforcement
  8. Be aware that many pieces of jewelry require special attention when being cleaned. This includes many delicate gemstones such as: Emerald, Opal, Tanzanite, Pearls… and many more. We recommend that these stones be cleaned only by your local full service fine jeweler. There is also some jewelry with stones set in a way that when cleaned improperly can result in many problems.
    • One example of this is any jewelry piece with an invisible setting. The stones in these rings are often set using minute amounts of glue that can be removed when exposed to an ultrasonic cleaner or the wrong type of cleaning solution, causing all the stones to fall out. Again pieces like these should be taken to your local jeweler for cleaning. If you are not sure, take it in!
Without this the jewelry you wear everyday will not look as pretty as you want them to be, they will begin to deteriorate, and you will begin to loose stones from them.
We advise you to go to a jeweler whom you see regularly for your purchases and repairs for these cleanings and inspections. If you do not have one and you live in the Inland Empire, we at Le Vive Jewelry are more than willing to furnish these services for you at no charge. Visit us at The Riverside Plaza!

How Deep will your watch go?

How Deep will your watch go?

Fifty meters, 3 ATM, 100 feet … we often see these marks on the dials or backs of our watches, but do we really know what they mean?  Water resistance markings are perhaps the most misleading information in the world of watches.

Let me start by including a chart that shows what the actual markings mean:

ATM
FEET
METERS
USAGE
1
33
10
Protected against accidental exposure to water. Washing Hands Ok.
3
100
30
Protected against accidental exposure to water. Washing Hands Ok.
5
165
50
Watch may be OK for swimming provided all gaskets are good.
10
330
100
Watch is suitable for swimming and snorkeling.
15
500
150
Suitable for swimming and submersion in water.
20
660
200
    Suitable for swimming and diving.

Most people believe that if their watch is 10 meters water resistant then they can go up to 10 meters underwater.  But this is simply not the case.  A watch marked “10M Water Resistant” is not suitable for submersion in water at all.  The watch can withstand the occasional splash, but should never be submerged fully in water or worn in the shower. In fact, any watch less than 100 meters water resistant should not be worn while showering, swimming, snorkeling, diving, or any other water intense activity.

Another commonly unknown fact is that once a watch has its battery changed for the first time, the original factory seal has been broken.  This is why it’s important to have your batteries changed by a professional watchmaker.  A watchmaker will be able to recommend any new gaskets that are needed to help keep it as water resistant as possible.

If you are a diver, or a person who likes to swim with their watch, then it is important you mention to the watchmaker that you would like to have your watch Pressure Sealed &Tested.  Many places have to send watches out for pressure seals, but Le Vive Jewelry has all the necessary tools and expertise to do it same day.  Keep in mind that this procedure can only be done on watches with Screw Down Crowns, and may require some additional gaskets to be changed.

So next time you’re buying a watch be sure and compare its water resistance level to your intended use of the watch.  If you’re planning on swimming with it then you’ll want a watch at least 100 meters resistant and with a screw down crown.

A New Beginning

Dear Readers and Customers,

This is Le Vive's first Blog and symbolizes our new acceptance and excitement about the future.  This week is the final week of one of our locations, and as we move forward and focus on one store we plan to implement technologies and social media in a way that is uncommon for most jewelry stores. But before we get there I'd like to share a brief introduction and history of our company (can also be found here: levivejewelry.com/company.htm )

Le Vive Jewelry™ +Le Vive Jewelry was established on September 17, 1997 under the name of Jewelry Express. Our first store opened at in the Galleria At Tyler Mall.   At that time our main focus was offering the public first class jewelry repair, watch services, and custom designed jewelry.  Since then, Le Vive has discovered more aspects to serve not only our loyal customers, but also the public at large. Gradually, we have developed our jewelry lines to include even more unique and higher quality jewelry.

On February 1st, 2005, we opened our second store in Riverside, CA at the Riverside Plaza. This store is much larger than our first store, still full service with a Jeweler and Watchmaker on premises, with a classic and elegant design for a jewelry store.

On September 1st, 2008, we relocated our first store to a bigger location in The Shoppes at Chino Hills, in Chino Hills, CA. We have enjoyed the open air location and have developed even more lasting relationships with our new customers there.
On January 31st, 2013, we will be closing the doors for our Chino Hills store for the last time.  Various financial and economic situations are the cause, but we have fully embraced it as a chance to go back to our core.  To focus on our established customers and give us a chance to re-invent ourselves in a way that will be better for all of our customers. This blog is the first step down our new path, stay tuned for more, much more...
